Control Layer - Part 1 (HSS)

After writing about the IMS technology architecture, we will analyze more deeply the control layer . As seen, in this layer is responsible to make the connection between devices and services, abstracting the used network.

Today, we write about the HSS (Home Subscriber Server)
HSS is like a devices' central database of IMS network, it's responsible for the authentication information, authorization and physical location. It stores the users profiles and their services, independently of the service provider.

HSS is an evolution of the HLR (Home Location Register), which is a node specified by the GSM architecture.

According to the 3GPP specification, HSS provides the establishment of calls and / or meetings, creation of security information devices and identification and authorization to access them. It interacts with CSCF (Call Session Control Function) through Diameter protocol.

Venturus presents IMS application

Venturus company has created a virtual contest of penalties with using IMS technology (IP Multimedia Subsystem). To illustrate and bring the technology closer to IMS users, Venturus chose to show a simulation on a TV program, based in a game with interaction with the remote viewers, via cellphone. The simulation uses the IMS platform to enable communication between the TV, notebooks and cellphones, through features and specific protocols. Thus, the players can see themselves on TV during the program. They are virtually represented by the photos you send by the cellphone.

Venturus has been developing applications on top of IMS technology for some time now. Futurecom In 2007, the Institute presented to the public an example of use of technology to transmit, by phone, pictures of the event in real time.

Ericsson's SDS

Ericsson’s SDS (Service Development Studio) is a development tool for IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) applications and is part of Ericsson Mobility World. It has a standard IMS-based network with communication services simulator and the client side includes devices for mobile, fixed broadband and WLAN access. The SDS is on version 4.1, which contains the new following features:

* Support for Nokia S60 phones and C + + APIs
* Integration with the SailFin 1.0 JavaEE / SIP server

SDS is based on the Eclipse IDE (Integrated Development Environment) and Wireless Toolkit (WTK). It also has several tools for testing, deployment and debug.

To download Ericsson SDS is a small registration is required to receive your free serial, then you can download it.
Soon, I’ll post a brief tutorial for installation of the SDS.

IMS Layers

Well, after a brief explanation of concepts IMS about IMS Concepts (IP Multimedia Subsystem), now we show how things work. Basically, the IMS architecture is based on 3 layers: Transport, Control and Services.

IMS Layers
Transport: This layer is responsible for converging converge all networks (wireless, GSM, GPRS, 3G, fixed telephony, among others) in networks based on IP, because IMS is based on networks that use the TCP / IP protocols.

This layer is intended to disregard the manner of how the data will be transported, no matter which network we're using, but how to use it, as it should be used in a much simpler and more standardized.

Control: Layer responsible for communication between devices and services. She It performs the authentication and controls traffic between the layers of network and services. It can also facilitate communication between services.

As this layer is all based on IP, it is able to combine data, voice and video in a single only one session.

Services: The most important layer because here the focus is on services that are available to users, we do not care how they come to the devices or other network, because it was oblivious to the abstracted by network and control layers. This causes makes that the IMS architecture has have flexibility to implement new services.

This makes the IMS architecture a reality for digital convergence and ready for the availability of services, able to be discovered and reused.
