Control Layer - Part 2 (CSCF)

We already talked about HSS, now is time to describe other component. The CSCF (Call Session Control Function) is a SIP server and it's responsable for the first iterations int the IMS network. It has the function of registration the termination and establishment of sessions. The CSCF server is divided on 3 parts: S-CSCF (Serving), I-CSCF (Interrogating) and P-CSCF (Proxy).

Installing Ericsson SDS

The SDS (Service Development Studio), is a Ericsson's tool development of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) aplications. Today will post a SDS installation tutorial.
System Requirements:

  • Java 5 Download (SDS does not work with Java 6!)
  • Windows XP SP2 (SDS does not work in Windows Vista!)
  • 1GB of RAM (512MB work, but .... )
  • WTK (Wireless Toolkit)

At the beginning, a license is needed for instalation. If you don't have it, register and ensure if for free! After this, select all components to install and place them where the Java 5 is istalled and where SDS will be installed.

After SDS installation, UIQ 3 installer will start (standart installation: nest, nest, finish). Then, Nokia compiler installer will start, again a standart installation. After WinPcap 3.1 installation, you will NOT restart, selecting the option "No, I'll reboot later" and press Next. Finalize the installation of UIQ 3 and then P1 SDK (Sony Ericsson) installation starts.

After that starts the installation of SailFin, it will be the Web Server for IMS Aplications. You can download Sailfin (Windows), save the file in C:\

Set the enviroment variables, JAVA_HOME. Run the Command Prompt and type java -Xmx256m -jar
Accept the license and enter the created directory C:\SailFin and type lib\ant\bin\ant -f setup.xml
After the "BUILD SUCCESSFUL" message appears you can close the Command Prompt and complete the installation of the SDS. Restart the computer. You now have SDS installed on your computer.

You can check the complete tutorial on IMS Technology Group. Download the complete installation manual and a video tutorial with full installation here.

Control Layer - Part 1 (HSS)

After writing about the IMS technology architecture, we will analyze more deeply the control layer . As seen, in this layer is responsible to make the connection between devices and services, abstracting the used network.

Today, we write about the HSS (Home Subscriber Server)
HSS is like a devices' central database of IMS network, it's responsible for the authentication information, authorization and physical location. It stores the users profiles and their services, independently of the service provider.

HSS is an evolution of the HLR (Home Location Register), which is a node specified by the GSM architecture.

According to the 3GPP specification, HSS provides the establishment of calls and / or meetings, creation of security information devices and identification and authorization to access them. It interacts with CSCF (Call Session Control Function) through Diameter protocol.

Venturus presents IMS application

Venturus company has created a virtual contest of penalties with using IMS technology (IP Multimedia Subsystem). To illustrate and bring the technology closer to IMS users, Venturus chose to show a simulation on a TV program, based in a game with interaction with the remote viewers, via cellphone. The simulation uses the IMS platform to enable communication between the TV, notebooks and cellphones, through features and specific protocols. Thus, the players can see themselves on TV during the program. They are virtually represented by the photos you send by the cellphone.

Venturus has been developing applications on top of IMS technology for some time now. Futurecom In 2007, the Institute presented to the public an example of use of technology to transmit, by phone, pictures of the event in real time.

IMS Layers

Well, after a brief explanation of concepts IMS about IMS Concepts (IP Multimedia Subsystem), now we show how things work. Basically, the IMS architecture is based on 3 layers: Transport, Control and Services.

IMS Layers
Transport: This layer is responsible for converging converge all networks (wireless, GSM, GPRS, 3G, fixed telephony, among others) in networks based on IP, because IMS is based on networks that use the TCP / IP protocols.

This layer is intended to disregard the manner of how the data will be transported, no matter which network we're using, but how to use it, as it should be used in a much simpler and more standardized.

Control: Layer responsible for communication between devices and services. She It performs the authentication and controls traffic between the layers of network and services. It can also facilitate communication between services.

As this layer is all based on IP, it is able to combine data, voice and video in a single only one session.

Services: The most important layer because here the focus is on services that are available to users, we do not care how they come to the devices or other network, because it was oblivious to the abstracted by network and control layers. This causes makes that the IMS architecture has have flexibility to implement new services.

This makes the IMS architecture a reality for digital convergence and ready for the availability of services, able to be discovered and reused.

Ericsson closes contract with Methodist University in Brazil

The Ericsson has a close partnership with the Universidade Metodista de São Paulo. With this the Metodista brings to the students the opportunity to develop products for the multimedia environment of convergence of Internet and Telecommunications. Besides the Metodista two more universities in Brazil have shown interest in cooperation so far.

As part of the agreement the university should provide facilities such as labs, computers and teachers, while Ericson contributes to the SDS (Service Development Studio) and the training of teachers.

Romualdo Barros, IMS Expert center manager at Ericsson Brazil, says: "That in markets such as Brazil, where IMS networks are being put into operation, it is important to get universities and local companies to invest their brainpower into developing IMS applications."

"We will also help Universidade Metodista to select the best applications and even make demos of these to show to the local operators. And where there is an interest, we will introduce the students to potential customers, or to commercial software development companies."

Barros sees this program as part of a bigger future scenario: “We want to start with a few universities in Brazil and later include other Latin American universities, such as in Chile."

As a result of the program, the Ericsson expects the following:

  • New skilled software professionals with IMS expertise
  • New IMS applications, up and running, conceived for commercial use
  • A positive picture of Ericsson as a company that brings innovation and investments to the academic world.

IMS concept

IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) is an entirely new way to distribute multimedia (voice, video, data, etc.) regardless of the device (fixed or mobile phone, IPTV, notebook, etc.), or the means of access (3G/EDGE/GPRS, Wi -Fi, broadband, phone line, etc.).

The telecommunications industry is currently migrating to all-IP systems, driven by the fundamental need to reduce costs, create new services that generate profit and protect the operator's business model. These are the goals for fixed and mobile communication as well.
IMS enables the convergence of technologies for data, voice and network on an infrastructure based on IP.
For users, IMS-based services will enable communications in several ways - including voice, text, photos and video, or any combination of these - in a highly personal and secure way.
This lets telephone operators offer new and innovative services that end users are expecting.

The IMS platform, is more than a technical system is a model for achieving consistently an inclusive vision of the convergence of communication services, network technologies, access, content, generating new revenue and control. With that wide and concrete opportunities for business and attractive prospects of ROI (Return on Investment), is the platform for suppliers as for business operators, content providers, and providing services, which will have at your disposal a new and broad range of opportunities for business.
